Hilton Head Island, SC Branch

Welcome to the AAUW Hilton Head, SC, Branch Website!

The Hilton Head Branch began as a satellite of the Beaufort branch in 1979. It came into it's own in 1986. Members are drawn from the area "South of the Broad" which stretches from Hilton Head Island to Sun City.

Meetings are held monthly from the Fall through May. The meeting location will vary based upon the type of meeting and to accommodate our wide membership. Yearly, we do have a fundraiser to raise funds for our annual Mature Women's Scholarships as well as to donate to the AAUW Educational Foundation and local community organizations. Our focus is to support education and equity for women and girls.

In addition to our regular meetings, we have several special interest groups. We also encourage branch participation in our state organization, especially the Legislative Day in February and annual meetings. We also join with other local organizations, including the League of Women Voters to sponsor joint meetings.

For membership information, please contact our Membership Vice-President, Sandy Stern at aestern1@yahoo.com or 342-4834. Dues include membership in the national association, state and local branch. All but $3.00 of the dues paid to the national office are tax deductible. Our latest newsletter is on the site for information about current meetings and interest group information.

Hilton Head Branch Scholarship Program Gets Underway for 2012

In the spirit of advancing educational and career opportunities for women within the local community, our branch is pleased to announce its 2012 Scholarship Program. Thanks to branch member contributions, fundraising, and profits from our annual Fashion Show/Brunch, the branch will offer three scholarship awards for 2012: $1500, $1000 and $500.

The AAUW Hilton Head Branch Board has made signficant changes in the scholarship schedule for the coming year. Instead of our usual January deadline, we have set an application deadline of March 9, 2012. This takes the application preparation period out of the holiday timeframe, which we hope will encourage applications. Instead of presenting the scholarships at the fashion show/brunch, the awards will be presented at a May 5, 2012 Awards Luncheon. This change allows the focus to be exclusively on the awardees and to spotlight the branch's efforts to support continuing education for local women.

The scholarship selection criteria remain the same as in previous years: a woman age 25 or older; an earned secondary school diploma or GED; a resident of Beaufort County south of the Broad River; and current or planned enrollment in a full or part-time program at an accredited 2 or 4 year college, university, or vocational/technical school.

The awards are applicable to tuition and fees only and are paid directly to the college, university, vocational or technical school. Documented proof of continuation or acceptance into a 2012 program of study is required with the application. The award must be used by the end of the 2012 calendar year. Previous award recipients are eligible for consideration, but must re-apply.

For futher information, applicants may contact the Scholarship Chair, Donna R. Bafundo, at 843-342-7572 or by email at dbafundo@hargray.com
