Starting in September 2010, AAUW Beaufort will expand its Books For Birthdays program to incorporate weekly or monthly excursions to the preschools for story time with the children. The story time will feature one of the books given to the children. This web site will be updated in September or October with a new calendar of events. Stay tuned.

Books for Birthdays and Corridor of Shame

We are now into the fourth year of our Books for Birthdays project. Each student in Jasper County public school pre-kindergarten program receives for his or her birthday a book that is wrapped.

In the Corridor of Shame documentary Jasper Country was named as a rural school district needing extra help, and the Beaufort Branch of AAUW determined this was a worthwhile project because of its strong commitment to public education. Beginning this year, we hope to expand the program to include those pre-K programs in Beaufort County that are seen as having a need similar to that of Jasper County. During the past 3 years, we have given more than 500 new books, some donated directly by the membership and others purchased through fundraisers.

Mature Woman's Scholarship

AAUW Beaufort provides a scholarship each year to a mature woman, age 21 or older, who is enrolled in a degree program at a college in Beaufort County. Funds for the scholarship are raised through the branch's annual attic sale, held in March.

Applications must be received by April 26. Click here to download the application as a WORD or PDF file. For more information, call Dawn Beattie at (843) 525-1599.

Legal Advocacy Fund

AAUW Beaufort's annual Holiday Raffle raises money for the national AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund. LAF works to combat sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace through community and campus outreach programs, a resource library and online advocacy tools, and various research reports. In collaboration with the Public Policy and Government Relations department, LAF seeks amicus curiae opportunities in cases of discrimination that disadvantage women in the workplace. LAF is also transitioning toward supporting landmark sex discrimination cases that have the potential to make a difference for all women. For details, visit http://www.aauw.org/advocacy/laf/.

Education Foundation

Our annual Phantom Tea raises money for the AAUW Education Foundation, which provides funds to advance education, research and self-development for women and to foster equity and positive societal changes. For information, contact Dawn Beattie at (843) 525-1599.
